Autumn Masquerade
Linda B. Gamble
Once I loved you.
In younger days, fresh and crisp,
we danced to a crunchy beat,
skirts swirled a kaleidoscope of color.
You teased me with days of bright sunshine,
seduced me with your full, round face
luminescent in the cloudless dark of night.
Slowly, I saw the menace of your ways –
your cool breath tore arbor’s clothing
from trembling limbs, taunting each
tree as you tossed its treasure.
The vibrant carpet of reds and golds
you spread became brittle brown,
soon to rot beneath my feet.
Cruel imposter,
I see you now for what you are.
Your crafty costume’s exposed.
I hear the death rattle in your chilly cough.
Your touch, once playful, warm,
now threatens, turns my core cold.
I want no part of what you bring,
but your haunting goes on.
